About Us
The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS) is a national professional organization of law students, lawyers, judges, academics, and policymakers who are committed to the idea that the law can and should be a force to improve the lives of all people. In an effort to counter the activist conservative legal movement that has sought to erode our enduring constitutional values, ACS has worked toward positive change in our society by articulating and advocating a progressive vision of our Constitution, focusing on fundamental constitutional values such as genuine equality, civil rights and liberties, meaningful access to justice, and democracy and the rule of law. ACS is a national leader in shaping the debate on key questions of law and public policy, promoting the development of new legal research and scholarship, and building and strengthening professional networks among the next generation of progressive leaders.Â
The American Constitution Society at the University of Virginia School of Law seeks to support a strong community of progressive law students and to influence debate on the law by advancing a progressive interpretation of the Constitution. We organize regular discussions featuring members of the judiciary, UVA Law faculty, and other prominent legal experts. We also organize annual voter registration drives and participate in election protection efforts, support our members’ scholarly and professional development, and host networking events. We are one of the nation's most active ACS chapters. Our chapter was awarded the ACS Student Chapter of the Year Award in 2018. We were also awarded an ACS Programming Award in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025, and 2026.Â
